Anthony "Tony" Filauro, 80, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, at St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor, Maine after a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Born on April 29, 1945, in New York City, New York, Tony lived a life defined by service, hard work, and dedication to his family, profession, and community.
After graduating from Long Island City High School in Queens, New York, Tony pursued higher education with an associate degree in Agronomy from SUNY Farmingdale in 1965. He continued his studies at the University of Maine in Orono, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Forestry in 1968 and later a Master of Science in Forestry in 1973. These achievements laid the foundation for a distinguished career in forestry and environmental sciences, beginning as a Professional Assistant in the Forestry Department at Purdue University before joining Great Northern Paper Company in Millinocket, Maine, where he worked for 28 years in several forestry positions. In 2003, he pursued self-employment in forestry and soils work before joining Gerald Pelletier, Inc. as Forester and then Safety Supervisor for seven years before retiring in 2015. As a State of Maine Registered Professional Forester and Certified Soil Scientist, Tony held master-level certification with the State of Maine Board of Pesticides Control. His expertise earned him numerous accolades, including the Society of American Foresters Presidential Field Forester Award in 2003 and the Austin Cary Professional Forester Award in 2005.
Tony worked long hours during his career while maintaining his deep commitment to his family and community, along with preserving good health through daily exercise, including running. He cherished his time spent on various outdoor activities with his family and dogs, especially at their camp on North Twin Lake. He devoted time to volunteer for many organizations, including St. Martin of Tours Parish, Boy Scouts of America, Katahdin Friends, Inc., Fire Road 16 & 17 Association, and Millinocket Housing Corporation. He served in leadership roles for many years in some of these organizations. Notably, he served for the past 37 years as Chairman of the Millinocket Planning Board.
Tony is survived by his loving wife Carolyn Filauro of 47 years; daughters Alison Elliott (Adam) and Angela Schroeder (Andrew); grandchildren Jacob Elliott, Katie Elliott, Madelyn Schroeder, and Ethan Schroeder; siblings Annette Alversa (John), Joanne O'Brien, James Filauro (Kim); and many other relatives and friends who were touched by his kindness. He was predeceased by his parents Alphonse and Josephine Filauro.
Tony will be remembered for his unwavering dedication and generosity. Those who wish to remember Tony in a special way may make gifts in his memory to: Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 223 W. Jackson Blvd., Suite 350, Chicago, IL 60606 https://www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org/ways-to-give/ways-to-give
