Beverly Daniels died peacefully surrounded by her family on March 25, 2026, after a brief stay at the Maine Veterans' Home in Bangor. She was born on July 16, 1953, in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, the daughter of Martin J. Prendergast and Anna (Wissenbach) Prendergast.
Beverly had the privilege of being an "Army brat," living in several states as well as in Germany during her youth before her family settled in Orono. She graduated from Orono High School in 1971 and the University of Maine in Orono in 1975 with a degree in child development and social services. In 1976, she co-founded the Greater Bangor Rape Crisis Center. She was a licensed social worker who dedicated her professional life to the well-being of children and the families that support them. She began her career as a social worker at Community Health & Counseling Services in Bangor where she not only helped children in the foster care system but made many lifelong friends. In 1993, she helped found the non-profit organization Families and Children Together (FACT), where she served as its Executive Director for 26 years.
Throughout her work at FACT, she helped foster the development and healing of children who experienced trauma, and faced emotional, behavioral, and substance use challenges. She helped countless families through the adoption process; supported youth with developmental disabilities; helped new parents build positive, nurturing, and supportive relationships with their children, including foster children; and helped keep families together by supporting grandparents that became primary caregivers.
She was a loving wife, devoted mother to her two children, and loved being an Oma to her grandchildren. She enjoyed going to the beach with winter escapes to Fort Myers in Florida, Ogunquit and Wells in the summer, and Lamoine State Park almost any time of the year as long as it included a stop at Jordan's. She loved spending time with family and friends, including hosting an annual gathering at her home to watch the Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race.
She is survived by her husband Stephen Daniels of Bangor; daughter Jessica Grondin and her husband Matthew, of Cumberland; son Ryan Shumaker of Bangor; step-daughter Lindsay Powles and her husband Chris of Concord, NH; four grandchildren, Olivia Shumaker of Bangor; Charlotte Grondin of Cumberland; and Van and Reid Powles of Concord, NH; one brother, Kevin Prendergast of Ellsworth; a special cousin Maureen DeRouin; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Neil Prendergast of Old Town.
A Celebration of Life will be held later this spring or summer. Those who wish to remember Beverly in a special way are encouraged to make gifts in her memory to either the Mabel Wadsworth Center in Bangor or the Alzheimer's Association of Maine. Condolences to the family may be expressed at SimpleCremationofMaine.com. The family would like to express their thanks to the staff at Ross Manor's Waterman Rehab Unit, the Maine Veterans' Home memory care unit, and Beacon Hospice for their care and support.
