Christopher Eugene Sprague

HAMDPEN - Christopher Eugene Sprague, 62, passed away on September 18, 2026. He was born December 15, 1963, in Houlton, Maine, the son of Benjamin and Virginia (Thayer) Sprague.

Chris spent much of his life working with his hands. A mechanic by trade and by nature, he was one of those people who seemed to simply understand how things worked. He passed much of that knowledge on to his son, Christopher, teaching him about mechanics and how to work with his hands.

Even after surgery resulted in the loss of his leg, Chris refused to let that take away his ability or desire to create. He continued working with his hands and found new things to make, including paracord leashes and leatherwork. He took great pride in the lighter holders, knife sheaths, moccasins, and other projects he created.

More than anything, Chris wanted to take care of his family. He was the kind of man who would give someone the shirt off his back if they needed it. He could certainly be grumpy, and he wasn't afraid to argue - sometimes even about something as simple as politics - but disagreements never changed the fact that he loved his family. Whatever the argument might have been, you always knew the love was still there.

Chris enjoyed playing cribbage and cards and sharing the things he knew with the people he loved.

He also deeply loved his dog, Bear, who passed before him. Bear was his best friend and constant companion. He ate whatever Chris ate, was a bit of a meathead, and was endlessly loyal. Chris kept Bear's ashes with him after Bear's passing, and his family intends for Chris and his best friend to ultimately rest together.

Chris is survived by his four sons, Anthony Hayman, Christopher Eugene Sprague II and his spouse, Ashley Sprague, Joshua Sprague, and Casey Sprague; his sisters, Elaine and her husband, Bob Neilander, Cindy, and Linda; and his nine grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, Benjamin and Virginia Sprague, and by his beloved dog and best friend, Bear.

A potluck-style celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at 1899 Pushaw Road in Glenburn, Maine. Family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate Chris's life. Condolences to the family may be expressed here, at SimpleCremationofMaine.com.
