Dennis P. Sullivan of Brooklin, ME (formerly of Abington, MA) passed away peacefully after a short illness on July 31, 2025.
Dennis was born on December 11, 1937 to Edward Francis and Ada Martha (Schoener) Sullivan. He grew up in Dedham, MA. He received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the Massachusetts College of Art and became an art educator. He taught art to students of all ages in Brockton, MA for many years. While teaching in Brockton, he met and married Clare Coughlan. Upon retirement, Dennis moved to Maine full-time and never tired of living on Flye Point, enjoying the panoramic coastal views, wildlife, and community.
In addition to teaching, Dennis spent his life creating art in many forms: painting, drawing, weaving, glasswork, wood carving, jewelry making, and ceramics. He was well known for his ability to see and appreciate beautiful things and curated a vast and eclectic collection of art and antiquities. He derived joy from every marvel and his spirit was one of a creator, a treasure hunter, and an alchemist.
A consummate host, his artistry extended into the kitchen as well-everyone had a favorite Dennis Sullivan dish. With Dennis there was always a seat at the table for everyone. His quick wit and humor always created a sense of fun with a hint of irreverence. He made many friends through authentic engagement, free of pretense, and motivated by a big heart.
Dennis is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Clare; children Maura (Andrew Thompson), David (Jane Shiau), and Kate (Nathan Odden); grandchildren Ada, Clara, Molly, Oliver, and Sosha; siblings Edward, Margaret, Helen, and Barbara; many nieces and nephews; cherished friends; and his feline companions Barnum and Bailey. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary and his beloved granddaughter Lena Rose.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
