Bangor - - It is with heavy hearts, we share the passing of Edward Emerson Hendrickson on June 19, 2025, at the age of 104.
After graduating from Brewer High School in 1938 he continued his education at Wentworth Institute of Technology (BA) and Gorham Teachers College (MS). Completing his degree, he joined the US Navy where he became a decorated TBM Bomber pilot flying off the aircraft carrier, USS Ticonderoga in the South Pacific during WW II. After the war he moved to East Millinocket as a teacher where he shared his love of skiing by creating a community ski area with his students. Changing careers, he worked for a period of time for the Great Northern Paper Company as the Director of Human Resources. In 1967 he became Dean of Students at NMVTI, moving his family to Presque Isle where he resided until he retired.
Ed was full of life, enjoying all types of activities. At age 100 he was able to ski 100 days. He loved being in the Bangor/Brewer parades as he became the oldest veteran. He was always ready for either a lobster or crab roll. He was extremely active and involved in most activities that were going on around him. He was always willing to help others in any way that he could, bringing his energy, strength, humor and generosity to all.
Ed was the son of late Justin Hendrickson and Lou Hendrickson. He lived fully and proudly with his wife of 62 years, Effie; traveling and enjoying their passion for skiing. Ed will truly be missed by son, Eric and wife, Elaine Hendrickson; and his daughter, Ellen and her husband, Jon Benoist; his two grandchildren, Melissa and Kyle; and three great grandchildren, Anders, Vino, and Nico.
Living at Winterberry Heights for the past 4 years, he enjoyed the caring and loving staff and activities at the facility. The family is deeply thankful to the compassionate professionals at St. Joseph Healthcare who cared for Ed and brought him comfort.
At his request there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bangor Humane Society, 630 Mt Hope Ave, Bangor, ME 04401, an organization Ed supported in memory of Ed for Pets.
