James Franklin

November 8, 1941 — December 15, 2025

James Arthur Franklin, known to family and friends as Jim, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2025, at his home with his wife and daughters at his side. Born on November 8, 1941, in Wichita, Kansas, Jim lived a life marked by dedication, service, and a deep love for family and community.

Growing up in Cherryvale, Kansas, as the eldest of six children born to Gene and Hermione (Stevenson) Franklin, Jim was an active youth who enjoyed sports and music. He played baseball, football, and basketball for the Cherryvale Fighting Cherries. He also played trumpet in the school band and performed in school plays. Beyond high school, Jim was a graduate of the University of Maryland.

Jim proudly served his country for twenty-four years, first in the United States Air Force and later in the United States Navy, specializing in anti-submarine warfare. His military career took him across the United States and abroad, including tours in Iceland and Spain, where his family was fortunate to join him.

Following his military service, Jim dedicated himself to a career in civil service. Beyond his professional life, he was an avid golfer, enjoying many rounds at the Penobscot Valley Country Club. Jim's beautiful tenor voice brought joy to many as he sang in barbershop quartet choruses in Maryland and Maine. Over the course of his life, he also enjoyed volunteering at the historic Sotterly Plantation in Maryland, the Cole Land Transportation Museum in Bangor, Maine; serving on the board of trustees of Maine Veterans' Homes, being a member of Kiwanis, Shriners and the Masons, and being a part of the Maine Troop Greeters.

Known for his storytelling and humor, Jim had a unique charm, often asking if he had told a story before and whether he told it the same way this time. His warmth, wit, and spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Sonia; daughters Kristin of Orland and Michelle (Jeff) Tuttle of Bangor; grandsons John (Jacqui) Bristol and Kyle Bristol of New Hampshire, Elliot Tuttle of California, and Miles Tuttle of Bangor; granddaughter Karolyn (Ryan) and great-granddaughter Nilsa Woods of Alaska; brother John Franklin of Illinois, and several nieces and nephews.

A private family service will be held to honor Jim's memory. His family wishes to thank all who have offered support and kindness during this difficult time.

Jim's legacy of love, service, and laughter will continue to inspire those who were fortunate to know him.
