Karen Ruth Tapley-Ethier, 55, of Brewer, Maine, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2026, at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family, following a courageous 10-year battle with scleroderma.

Throughout her illness, Karen demonstrated extraordinary strength, determination, and resilience. She fought with everything she had, never backing down or giving up, right up until her final breath. Although her illness took so much from her, it could never diminish the love she had for her family or the incredible spirit that defined her.

Karen was born on June 4, 1971, in Millinocket, Maine, to George and Joanne (Daisey) Tapley. She grew up in Millinocket and attended Stearns High School, graduating with the Class of 1989.

Above all else, Karen's greatest joy and proudest accomplishment in life was her family. She treasured every moment spent with her children and grandchildren, who meant the absolute world to her. Nothing made Karen happier than having her family and friends gathered together, filling her home with love, laughter, and memories.

Whether celebrating holidays and birthdays or simply getting together for no reason at all, Karen loved hosting gatherings at her home. Barbecues, friendly games of cornhole, music, evenings around the campfire, and the laughter of those she loved were among her favorite things. It wasn't the occasion that mattered to Karen, but the people she shared it with.

Before her illness limited her ability to enjoy some of life's simple pleasures, Karen loved gardening, baking, fall apple-picking adventures with her family, and clam digging along the Maine coast. These were the moments that brought her happiness and created memories her loved ones will forever cherish.

Karen leaves behind her husband of 34 years, John Ethier of Brewer; her son, Nick Ethier of Brewer; her daughter, Mikayla Ethier, and Mikayla's partner, Andrew Grindle, of Alton; and her three cherished grandchildren, Allison May Grindle, James Michael Grindle, and Khloe Ann Grindle, all of Alton.

She is also survived by her sister, Kathy Pineau, and brother-in-law, Rick Pineau, of Millinocket; her brothers, George Tapley and Charles Tapley, both of Millinocket; her sister-in-law, Shannon Robichaud, and her husband, Scott, of Corinna; her brother-in-law, Chris Ethier, and his partner, Tiffany Butler, of Hampden; her sister-in-law, Raychell Ethier of Dover; and her mother-in-law, Jackie Ethier of Hampden.

Karen also leaves behind her lifelong best friends, Julie Hamm of East Millinocket and Shelley Glidden of Greenfield, along with many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whose lives were touched by her friendship, love, and laughter.

She was predeceased by her parents, George and Joanne Tapley; her brother, Jerry Tapley; her father-in-law, Mike Ethier; and her mother-in-law, Pam Ethier.

Karen will be remembered for her unwavering love and devotion to her family, her remarkable strength, and the countless memories she created with those fortunate enough to know and love her. Her courage throughout her illness was extraordinary, but her greatest legacy will always be the love she gave so freely and the family she held so close.

Though her battle has come to an end, the love she shared, the laughter she inspired, and the memories she leaves behind will live on in the hearts of her family and friends forever.

In Karen's memory, the family has chosen the National Scleroderma Foundation for those wishing to make a memorial contribution.
