Rolland Perry

October 29, 1935 — May 15, 2025

DIXMONT - It is with heavy hearts and saddened spirits to report that Rolland F. Perry has left his earthly home on May 15, 2025 at the age of 89 years.

He was the first of seven children born to Barbara [Farrington] and Fay Perry in Lincoln, Maine on October 29, 1935. He graduated from Lincoln High School and enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps. When he completed his service with the Marines, he entered the University of Maine's Forestry Program and graduated with a B.S. Degree in Forestry.

He worked for the James W. Sewall Company for several years before he joined the Bangor Department of Public Works. He was the first Forester for the City of Bangor and remained with the City for over 40 years until his retirement in 2006 at the age of 70. During that time, he created the Rolland F. Perry City Forest, a magnificent life time legacy for the Bangor community. Rolland was the right man in the right place at the right time for Bangor. He was initially employed to care for the elms of Bangor. As those trees finally succumbed to the Dutch Elm Disease, Rolland and his crew worked hard taking down dead Elm trees. He cared for and had a hand in creating the four city forests of 785 acres and 204 acres of parks, as well as 20 miles of trails. He oversaw the planting of some 812,809 shade trees in Bangor. He created a City Tree Nursery which produced some 400 trees a year for use in the City. He initiated the composting of leaves collected by the City to produce the loam and mulch the City uses-approximately 1000 tons of leaves a year, saving the City nearly $70,000 in tipping fees. He also instituted the conversion of wood waste (some 1000-2000 tons/year) into bio-mass to be sold to various bio-mass users. Rolland was an active member of the Bangor Rotary Club and earned their Paul Harris Award for his service. Indeed, he was an extremely dedicated and hard-working Forester and accomplished a great deal for Bangor.

He married Carol Haines and together they had two children: a son, Kevin, and a daughter, Cindy. They each had a son and a daughter. Rolland truly enjoyed most outdoor activities---fishing, hunting, trapping, etc., which gave him peacefulness and joy. He was also an avid reader and loved researching various worldly topics on the computer. He and Lillian traveled around the world upon retirement and built a lifetime of happy memories.

Rolland leaves his loving wife of twenty years, Lillian [Roque]. He also leaves his devoted son, Kevin and wife Tammy Perry and his daughter, Cindy and husband, Brian Amaral. He leaves four grandchildren: granddaughter Rebecca [Perry] and husband Brandon Rivera and their two children [Great Grandchildren], Allie and Noah Rivera; his grandson Jeremy and wife Maila Perry; his granddaughter Brianna [Amaral] and husband Derek Roepke and grandson Benjamin Amaral and girlfriend, Courtney, and nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his long-time close friend, Joseph Gibbons and special nephew, Charles Dwelley.

You will see the hand of Rolland Perry on every street and acre of the City of Bangor. When you next walk under the shade of a tree or take a stroll through the Rolland F. Perry City Forest, thank Rolland and his hard working and dedicated crew of the City's Forestry Department.

We honor Rolland's request not to have a funeral. Family, friends and co-workers are invited to attend a Memorial to be held at the Rolland F. Perry City Forest on Saturday, June 14, 2025 at 10 am at the Stillwater Avenue Entrance.
